ADDICTION in the 21st Century. A point of view from a mom living it.

First, I want to preface this with the fact that I am not a medical professional or educated on this topic in any way shape or form; unless you count my hours of reading on the subject. The opinions I’m expressing are my own and based on my own personal experiences and observations.

As a child, I grew up in a loving and functional family of alcoholics, addicts and, as I’m only now realizing, a family riddled with mental health disorders. Depression and anxiety seem to…

In a world where you REALLY CAN be anything, please, please be kind. JUST BE KIND.

I had an experience today that, to be blunt, really f-@ked me up. Not in a bad way. In a profound and meaningful way. On my way to Target to pick up an order containing a few skincare items that my seventeen year old daughter can’t live without, there was a homeless family collecting what they could to get by. This Target is in my neighborhood and it’s an area where there really are not many people struggling financially like so many others are…

This entire week I have been in a funk. I’m due to return to the office next week and the sense of loss I’m feeling now far exceeds how I felt on March 13 when I realized it was my last day in the office. Our team did a fantastic job transitioning to remote work, so we never skipped a beat. Many people, myself included, already had their own home office set-up. In the beginning we had weekly team meetings, and everyone did a fantastic job working together and getting through the days. Then the days turned to weeks, weeks…

After watching the last debate, I found myself feeling some kind of way. Regardless of who is leading the country this is still the United States of America and every individual really does have control over their own lives. American Politics seem to have become some sort of twisted game, and I don’t want to continue to participate.

I did not vote for Trump in 2016 and I will not vote for Trump in 2020. I will also not allow this to rule my life. When it became apparent that Trump was going to become the Republican candidate, I admit…

Last night my husband and I went out to dinner with a small group of friends. We decided on a very nice restaurant with an impressive menu and great ambiance. I was really looking forward to a night out without kids or work to relax, have a delicious meal, good conversation and some laughs. Especially since this is the first time we’ve been out in the new year.

Once seated at our table and after drink orders had been delivered, a couple began discussing one of their children, who recently passed her driver’s test. They were both proud and nervous…

At the beginning of each new year I like to reflect on the past year, noting what worked and what didn’t; where I need to improve and think of what goals to work on. As I was writing it out in my new planner, my husband asked me what I was doing. When I replied that I was working on my plan for 2020 — which included getting more exercise, simplifying and organizing the house, he asked, “Wasn’t that last year’s plan?” Of course, I was not amused by this question. I explained how this year’s plan was better because…

This is my life now. It’s not quite what I thought it would be, but it’s mine and I own it.

My day begins today at 6 am. Not because I’m waking to get in a run, or a morning meditation before I have green tea and avocado toast to fuel my busy day. I need to be out the door by 6:30 am to get to work early so I can leave early to take my youngest teen to see a therapist for anxiety/depression, then pick up my oldest teen from an outpatient program at an Addiction Recovery Center…
